This is the standard and best-known route to the summit of Dom. It starts from the Domhütte and climbs glacier terrain and snow slopes to the Festigrat, then follows the ridge to the summit. The route is generally considered a long, serious alpine climb rather than a technical rock route. Objective hazards include crevasses, snow conditions, and exposure on the ridge. The upper mountain can require careful route-finding in poor visibility. It is commonly done as a two-day ascent with an overnight at the Domhütte.

The Festigrat is the classic ridge line associated with the normal ascent of Dom. It is a long alpine ridge route with sustained exposure and mixed snow-and-rock climbing. Conditions on the ridge can vary significantly, especially with wind, fresh snow, or verglas. It is less a pure technical climb than a serious high-altitude mountaineering route. The route is documented in standard alpine sources as a named way to the summit. It is typically undertaken by experienced alpinists with good route-finding skills.
