The classic and historically significant route on Annapurna I is the North Face, first climbed by the French in 1950. It is a very serious high-altitude alpine route with objective hazards including avalanches, seracs, crevasses, and extreme exposure; conditions are often unstable and the mountain has a very high fatality rate.

The Northwest Face is a documented major alpine line on Annapurna I and is among the most serious routes on the mountain. It involves sustained steep snow, ice, and mixed climbing in a highly avalanche-prone environment with complex route-finding and severe objective danger.

The South Face of Annapurna I is a well-known and extremely committing alpine objective. It is characterized by very steep terrain, rockfall and avalanche exposure, and difficult high-altitude mixed climbing.
